1. What are the State, County and/or City taxes for this area?
State: personal income taxes are 2.8% of taxable income.
County: real estate taxes are based on the value of real property.
City of Uniontown: real estate taxes and an earned income tax of 1% based only on earned (W-2 or self employment) income.
2. What is the local sales tax for Fayette County?
The county currently assesses no sales tax. PA sales tax is 6% of taxable items. Currently, there is no sales tax on grocery and several other items.
3. What are the property taxes for the County?
Property taxes are paid to the county, township and school district based on a stated millage. It varies based on locality.
4. What is the income tax for this area? Is retirement pay considered taxable or are there some sort of limits as to what is or is not taxable?
Income taxes are from three levels of government: Federal, State and Local. State income tax rate is 2.8% and includes virtually all income as taxable income (exceptions include pensions, social security, PA Municipal bond interest, etc.). As stated above, the local income tax is 1% but only on earned income.
5. Are there any assessments - special fees - usage charges or intangible taxes and if so what are they?
There are no personal property taxes. There is a per capita tax which is nominal.
6. What are vehicles registration fees? What sort of vehicle inspections are required, if any?
The state of PA requires annual inspections, and annual registration fees which are currently $36 for personal autos. The Photo License Center is located on North Gallatin Avenue Extension, Uniontown; 724-437-4760.
7. What are local housing costs for this county?
Fayette County has a variety of elements that make it a challenge to give this question an answer including lot size, urban vs. rural, type of sewage, etc. Housing values, according to the 1990 census, averaged $45,500. Currently an average cost for a two bedroom, one bath, one car garage ranch style house could be between $65,000 for wood to $75,000 for brick.
8. Are there fire and police departments in each of the towns in the County or do they share facilities and personnel?
Fayette County now has a 911 system. Uniontown has a full time fire department, and many of the communities in the county have a volunteer fire department. Local telephone books have a listing inside the front cover.
9. What is the availability of shopping in Fayette County?
We have two area shopping malls that feature nationally-known stores, including Sears and JC Penney, as well as many plazas (including Wal*Mart, Super K-Mart, Lowe’s, Gabriel Brothers, Fayette Plaza and many more). All are centrally located in and around Uniontown, which is within a 25 minute or less drive from anywhere in the county.
